Baby Bedtime Essentials Checklist for New Moms

Short answer: A safe infant bedtime setup is simple: a safety-compliant crib, bassinet, or play yard; a firm, flat sleep surface; and a fitted sheet. Place the baby on their back. Keep blankets, pillows, toys, bumpers, and other soft items out of the sleep space.
Most products sold as “bedtime essentials” are optional. The empty sleep space is the essential part.
Essential, useful, and optional
| Priority | Item | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Crib, bassinet, or play yard | Current instructions, correct assembly, and no recalls |
| Essential | Firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet | The sheet fits the supplied mattress without gaps or bunching |
| Useful | Correctly sized sleepwear or wearable blanket | Maker’s size and care directions; no weighted product |
| Optional | Monitor, nightlight, or sound machine | Placement, cords, volume, and manufacturer instructions |
Build the sleep space first
Use the mattress supplied or specified by the sleep-product manufacturer. Do not add a topper, pillow, positioner, bumper, or loose blanket. Check assembly hardware and stop using a product with damage or a recall.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a firm, flat surface with only a fitted sheet and placing babies on their backs for sleep.
Choose sleepwear for the conditions
Read the size, fiber, warmth, and care information for the exact garment. No fabric guarantees that a baby will stay at the right temperature. Consider the room, the garment, and the baby’s other clothing together.
If you use a wearable blanket, choose the maker’s current size and keep it unweighted. If you swaddle, follow current rolling guidance and stop as soon as the baby shows signs of trying to roll. Our swaddle safety checklist explains the fit and transition points.
Keep cords and devices away
Monitors, lamps, chargers, and sound machines belong outside the sleep space. Route every cord where the baby cannot reach it now or as mobility increases. Mount and operate devices according to their instructions.
A monitor does not replace a safe setup or caregiver checks. Features such as movement alerts or temperature readings also do not diagnose a medical problem.
Use light and sound for the caregiver, not as a promise
A dim light may make nighttime feeding or checks easier for an adult. A sound machine may mask household noise. Neither product is required, and neither can promise longer sleep.
Keep sound devices away from the baby, use a low setting, and follow the manufacturer’s placement guidance. If a sound seems uncomfortable or the baby reacts badly, turn it down or stop using it.
A short bedtime routine
- Dim the room and reduce activity.
- Feed and change the baby as needed.
- Use correctly sized sleepwear.
- Place the baby on their back in the empty sleep space.
The routine does not need a long product list. Repeatable steps are easier to follow at 2 a.m., when nobody wants to troubleshoot a complicated gadget.
Nightly check
- The sleep surface is firm, flat, and clear.
- The fitted sheet is secure.
- The baby is placed on their back.
- No blanket, pillow, toy, positioner, or bumper is present.
- No reachable cord or device is near the sleep space.
- Sleepwear fits and shows no damage.
Frequently asked questions
Does a baby need a blanket at bedtime?
Do not place a loose blanket in an infant sleep space. Use correctly sized sleepwear or an unweighted wearable blanket when appropriate for the conditions.
Is a nightlight necessary?
No. It is optional and may help the caregiver see during checks. Place it and its cord out of reach.
Does white noise make a baby sleep longer?
Do not buy a sound machine on that promise. Some families use one to mask household noise, but placement and volume still need attention.
Can a plush toy be part of the bedtime routine?
It can appear during supervised, awake interaction, but remove it before placing an infant in the crib, bassinet, or play yard.
